1. Orchard Yield Assessment in North-East of Morocco using Satellite Imagery

Agricultural sector represents one of the pillars of the Moroccan economy. The Green Morocco Plan (GMP) established in 2008 present the main engine of development of this sector and for local economy. One of the objectives of Pillar I and Pillar II of GMP was to maximize production with less use of water resources. As an effect of climate change, Morocco is experiencing a strong variability in spatial and temporal variability of precipitation with a detrimental effect on yield and quality of crop... K. 2. MAPPING AND ASSESSING AFRICAN SOILS FERTILITY USING HIGH-RESOLUTION REMOTE SENSING AND MACHINE LEARNING APPROACHES: STATE-OF-THE-ART AND PERSPECTIVES

Africa is far from exploiting its true agricultural potential. United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicates that the continent has 60% of non-cultivated lands worldwide. While soil fertility is well highlighted as one of the major limiting factors, only limited information is available on soil nutrient contents and nutrient availability in the African soils. Soil fertility of agricultural fields is related to many physical and chemical properties, such as texture, organic matter... M. Hmimou, A. Laamrani, F. Sehbaoui, A. Chehbouni, S. Khabba, D. Dhiba

3. Irrigation Water Management for Potato crop under Pivot Irrigation System using Remote sensing techniques

When water application records low efficiency, the water losses increased. Irrigation systems often ignore soil variability and water applied uniformly on the field; hence, the water losses amplified. Which means more water application, more energy demand, and more money expenses. El-Salhia region contains a big agricultural farm located at the South Eastern of Nile delta. The field NO 34 was chosen to be investigated under the pivot central sprinkler irrigation system which cultivated with...

4. Application of precision agriculture technologies in grazing: example of goats browsing in forest rangelands of Northern Morocco

The aim of this study was to characterize patterns of grazing behavior of goats in a Mediterranean forest rangeland. We conducted a one-year study in the Chefchaouen region, Northern Morocco, during two contrasting seasons (spring and summer) using new technological tools. Eight goats were simultaneously fitted with GPS collars and sensors for 3 days during each season. A calibration study and classification tree analysis were used to predict other grazing activities of goats (eating, walking,... Y. Chebli, S. El otmani, M. Chentouf, J. Hornick, J. Cabaraux

5. QUANTIFICATION OF OPTIMAL FERTILIZERS DEMAND IN WHEAT AND CORN FIELDS IN MOROCCO USING VERY HIGH-RESOLUTION REMOTE SENSED IMAGERY AND HYBRID COMPUTATIONAL APPROACHES

Abstract. Demand on agricultural products is increasing as population continues to grow. Data driven management of macronutrients (i.e., nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)) and crops are of critical prominence to get the most out of soil in terms of crop yield while preserving environment. This study aims to establish a quantitative framework for macronutrient (i.e., nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) status (i.e., excess, deficiency) for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum... K.M. Amouzouvi, K.E. Ozou, L. Kolani, K.A. Amouzouvi, J.M. Sogbedji

7. The Yield Gap In Africa: Closing the gap through soil attributes management using remote sensing & Precision Agriculture Approaches at the field scale

In Africa, which has the most population growth in the world, the agricultural system is characterized by the predominance of smallhoder farmers. In order to cope with intense population growth and increased production costs through yield gap closing. Yield gap is defined as the difference between potential yield and actual yield and is an inevitable method to improve yields while decreasing the environmental impacts of agricultural systems. The variability of yields is strongly controlled by... K. Khechba, A. Laamrani, A. Chehbouni, D. Dhiba, K. Misbah

8. Monitoring irrigation water use at large scale irrigated areas using remote sensing in water scarce environment

Increasing pressure on available water resources in semi-arid region will affect the availability of water for irrigated agriculture. In this context, adoption of innovative and cost-effective tools for water management and analysis of water use patterns in irrigated areas is required for an efficient and sustainable use of water resources.  This study aims to evaluate a remote sensing-based approach which allows estimation of the temporal and spatial distribution of crop evapotranspiration... 9. Deep Learning is bringing pan-African small holder advisory services based on mid-infrared spectroscopic soil analysis to the next level

The majority of African smallholder farmers do not have access to soil analytical services. The main reasons are relatively high costs of wet chemical services and difficult logistics. As a result they have to rely on blanket fertilizer recommendations. This often causes poor soil management due to very heterogeneous soil conditions. As a result, the return on investment from blanket fertilizer recommendations is low and fertilizer acceptance is not growing among smallholder farmers. Soil spectral... T. Terhoeven-urselmans, D. 10. Soil organic carbon mapping in Tunisia: comparison of different interpolation methods

Soil organic carbon (SOC) stock is an important carbon pool in terrestrial ecosystems. It plays an important role in agricultural productivity and is often used as a key indicator of soil quality whether for soil fertility or climate regulation. SOC stocks are difficult to estimate due to the large spatial variability. In this way, many different techniques have been conducted for predicting and mapping SOC content. However, although numerous techniques are in use, there is still debate on which... M. Barbouchi, H. Bahri, A. Souissi, H. Cheikh m'hamed, M. Annabi

11. A reinforcement learning based approach for efficient irrigation water management

Due to population growth and the effects of climate change, most of the world's regions are threatened by water scarcity, especially in Africa and the Mediterranean region. In Morocco, agriculture consumes more than 85% of available water. Thus, to preserve water resources, the rational management of irrigation water is necessary. In this context, recent technological progress and the emergence of artificial intelligence could provide an effective decision support tool for the rational and... C. El hachimi, S. Belaqziz, S. 12. Modelling Fertigation and Micro-Climate Parameters for Greenhouse Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.)

Amidst the hiking price of fertilizer and projected water scarcity across the world, it is imperative to explore the interaction between fertilizer, irrigation and genotype notwithstanding the micro-climate parameters so as to maximize yield while protecting the environment. The Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) is a model which employs all these input factors to help predict yield and thereby make an informed decision.  The study sort to calibrate and validate the... 13. Precision Maize Nutrition: Evidences from On-farm Experimentation of Quefts Estimated Nutrient Requirement for Variable Densities in Smallholder Farmers in Ethiopia

Quantitative Evaluation of the Fertility of Tropical Soils (QUEFTS) model is an important tool for estimating optimal nutrient requirement of crops. The study was conducted to evaluate QUEFTS estimated (QE) nutrient requirement of maize in two pant densities (32,443 and 53,333 plants/ha in Central Rift Valley (CRV); 27724 and 62,000 plants/ha in Jimma) on fields of three farmers wealth classes (poor, medium and wealth) in contrasting agro-ecologies of Ethiopia. QUEFTS follows a target oriented... W.B. Kenea, T.B. Tura, A.N. Woldekristos

14. Potato Yield Prediction Using Multi-temporal Sentinel-2 Data and Multiple Linear Regression

Traditional potato growth models have a number of flaws, i.e., the cost of data collection, quality of input data, and the absence of spatial information in some cases. To address these challenges, we created a multiple linear regression model (MLRM) that uses the multi-temporal Sentinel-2 derived indices to predict potato yield. Along the growing season (from October 2019 to February 2020) eight Sentinel-2 imageries were collected, afterwards, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)... M.E. 15. Soil Moisture Sensing for Increased Water Use Efficiency and Crop Yields in Furrow Irrigated Systems: a Case of Mubuku Irrigation Scheme in Uganda

Water and nutrient use efficiencies remain low in most of the irrigated systems in developing countries, undermining crop productivity in these areas. This is partly due to lack of precise and site-specific information to guide irrigation scheduling. In most cases information on soil properties and crop water requirements is lacking and thus irrigation scheduling is done on rotational basis whether the crop needs water or not. Consequently, the amount of water stored in soil root zone for crop... E. Opolot, D. Besigye, P. Musinguzi, I.N. Alou, T.A. Basamba, G. Olupot
